TRANSFER CREDIT: From another college or university
Overview
Muskegon Community College welcomes college and university transfer students! In general, we award college transfer credit for coursework completed with a grade of “C” or higher from regionally-accredited institutions of higher education. MCC will award equivalent course credit when applicable, and when direct equivalencies are not available, we may award elective credit in the appropriate academic subjects.
To view the many different ways students may get credit at MCC (including credit for exams like AP, CLEP, and IB), visit our Credit for Prior Learning page.
Transfer Credit Guidelines
Incoming transfer credit is determined on an individual student basis using these guidelines:
- Enroll First – Students must first enroll to MCC by applying online before a college/university transcript may be evaluated for possible transfer credit.
- Official Transcripts – MCC will only accept official college transcripts sent directly from the college/university where the credit was originally completed. In order to be considered “official,” transcripts must be sent directly from the college/university where the credit was originally earned, not directly from the student.
- How & Where to Send – Official transcripts may be sent by mail or sent electronically through the college/university’s secure third-party transcript ordering system. If an MCC email is needed when requesting your transcript from another school, use: officeoftheregistrar@muskegoncc.edu. The mailing address to send official transcripts is:
Registrar’s Office
Muskegon Community College
221 S. Quarterline Rd.
Muskegon, MI 49442
- Regionally Accredited College/University – MCC will only consider transfer credit from a regionally accredited college or university. A list of regional-accrediting organizations can be viewed here.
- Grades – Only courses with a grade of “C” or higher will be considered for transfer credit. Credits only, not grades, are accepted in transfer. Grades from other schools are not entered on MCC transcripts nor calculated in the cumulative grade point average.
- Degree Residency Requirement – A student may transfer any number of credits to MCC; however, a student must complete at least 30 credit hours, or the last 15 credit hours of a degree, at MCC in order to receive a degree from MCC.
- Course Descriptions/Syllabi – If a determination cannot be made on the transfer credit a student should receive, the student may need to obtain a copy of course descriptions and/or syllabi with course objectives. The Registrar’s Office will contact the appropriate academic department to review the course descriptions/syllabi and make a determination.
- Transfer Credit on MCC Transcripts – The total amount of transfer credit accepted from another college/university will appear on the student’s MCC transcript, but not the specific credit accepted.
- Evaluation Time – Transcripts will be evaluated within approximately 2-3 weeks for in-state colleges/universities and 3-5 weeks for out-of-state colleges/universities. The evaluation time may be longer during peak times.
- International Transcripts – International credits must be evaluated through www.wes.org or www.ece.org to be accepted for evaluation.
Time Limits on Transfer Credits
In most cases, credits will be accepted without a time limit. For certain courses, current knowledge in the subject matter is essential, so there are time limits on certain courses. The following courses must have been taken within the time limits listed:
- Accounting – Credit must be earned within the past ten years.
- Information Technology/Computer Science – Credit must be earned within the past five years.
- Nursing – All Nursing courses, as well as non-Nursing courses required for nursing degrees, must be earned within the past eight years. If credit was earned more than eight years ago, competency must be validated by established examinations or by repeating the course. Please contact the Nursing department for more information about the possibility of Nursing transfer credit or competency examinations.
- Office System Education – Credit must be earned within the past 10 years.
- Liberal Arts – Liberal Arts courses generally don’t have a time limit for transfer credit or being used towards a degree program at MCC.
Transfer Re-Evaluation Request
If you wish to contest the transfer credit you were awarded, you may submit the Request for Transfer Course Equivalency Re-Evaluation Form.
- Complete one request form for each department/subject area and include a copy of course descriptions and course syllabi, which should include course objectives and outcomes for the year the course was taken.
- Send the form, course descriptions, and course syllabi to the Registrar’s Office at OfficeoftheRegistrar@muskegoncc.edu.
- Results of your re-evaluation are final and are based on documentation you submitted. Final results will be emailed to students’ MCC email accounts within four weeks.

CLEP: College level equivalent credit examinations
CLEP (the College-Level Examination Program®) offers 33 exams that cover intro-level college course material. With a passing score on one CLEP exam, you could earn three or more college credits at more than 2,900 U.S. colleges and universities.
CLEP was created to help individuals with prior knowledge in a college course subject earn their degree efficiently and inexpensively. That prior learning could have taken place through advanced high school courses, independent reading and study, online courseware or textbooks, noncredit courses, or on-the-job training.
Anyone interested in earning college credit can take a CLEP exam.
Each institution sets its own policy regarding the acceptance of CLEP examinations and the amount of credits they award. Click on the following link to review CLEP information for MCC: MCC CLEP test equivalencies
At MCC, the acceptance of, and determination of minimum scores for, the CLEP examinations are determined by the department authorizing credit for that subject. Students may earn a maximum of 30 semester hours of credit through the CLEP/DANTES examinations.
NOTE: As per the Michigan Transfer Agreement, CLEP credits do NOT fulfill Michigan Transfer Agreement requirements so CANNOT be used as transfer credits
Cost
The total cost to take a CLEP exam at MCC is $87 CLEP exam fee (per exam, payable to CollegeBoard) + $25 MCC test administration fee (per appointment, payable by cash/check/money order at time of appointment)
Each year, nearly 50,000 military service members as well as eligible spouses and civil service employees take CLEP exams to reach their education goals. Because the exams are funded through the Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Education Support (DANTES), you could have your exam fee waived if you are eligible. Click here to see if you are eligible. MCC is a DANTES-Funded CLEP Test Center.
Registration
Register and pay for your exam on the CLEP website, CollegeBoard.org/clep. Choose MCC as your testing site during registration.
After you complete the online registration process, print your CLEP exam registration ticket. Scan and email your ticket to testingcenter@muskegoncc.edu
For questions related to the CLEP exam refund policies and CLEP exam registration ticket expiration information, please refer to the CLEP website: CollegeBoard.org/clep
Schedule
CLEP exams are offered each week at MCC by appointment only. Exams typically take 90–120 minutes to complete depending on the subject and are administered on the computer. Due to space limits and time requirements, an individual taking a CLEP exam may be limited to one (1) exam per visit unless prior arrangements have been made. Call 231-777-0676 to make an appointment.
Test Scores
Students receive their CLEP exam scores immediately after completing the exam. The only exception is the College Composition, which is two hours long and takes approximately one month to receive a score through the mail. Allow three weeks for CLEP scores to reach your institution.
Visit the CLEP website for test information or study guides.

How to Apply for Credit
Students enrolled in a degree or certificate program at MCC may submit a copy of their current industry-recognized credential and the Credit for Industry-Related Credentials Application Form to the Registrar’s Office in one of the following ways:
Email: OfficeoftheRegistrar@muskegoncc.edu
Fax: (231) 777-0209
Mail: Registrar’s Office, 221 S. Quarterline Rd, Muskegon, MI 49442

LIFE EXPERIENCE: On the Job training/Non-Credit Courses/Portfolios/ETC
Overview
Students may be granted credit towards an academic program at MCC through the Life Experience Assessment Program (LEAP). This program is for students who can provide documentation showing they already possess the knowledge or skills that are equivalent to MCC coursework.
How to Apply
Students seeking LEAP credit must submit the LEAP application form, along with supporting documentation. The form provides more details to help guide you in preparing your application. Before submitting a LEAP application, you must pay the $20 per credit LEAP application fee by calling the Financial Services office at (231) 777-0249 or by visiting the Student Welcome Center on the Main Campus.
LEAP application material may be submitted by email to OfficeoftheRegistrar@muskegoncc.edu, by fax to (231) 777-0209, or in-person at the Student Welcome Center. Be sure to follow the instructions on the LEAP application form before submitting the application.
Cost & Payment
There is a non-refundable $20 per credit hour fee that must be paid before submitting LEAP application material. This fee is for the evaluation of the LEAP application and applies to the number of credits that the student is applying for, not the number of credits the student is awarded for LEAP. Payment of the LEAP application fee does not guarantee any LEAP credits will be awarded. Financial aid funds may not be used to cover LEAP application fees.
You may pay LEAP application fees by calling the Financial Services office at (231) 777-0249 or by visiting the Financial Services office on the Main Campus.
Important Reminders
• Students are highly encouraged to review their LEAP application material with either a MCC Counselor or with the appropriate academic Department Chairperson prior to submitting and paying for a LEAP application.
• Students may earn a maximum of 30 credits through LEAP.
• LEAP credits are intended to fulfill academic program requirements at MCC and are not intended transfer to other institutions. As such, students must be actively enrolled in a credential-seeking program at MCC in order to apply for LEAP credit.
• Students combining LEAP credit with other forms of prior learning credit (such as AP, CLEP, IB, Credit for Industry Recognized Credentials, etc.) must still meet MCC’s degree residency requirement, which requires students to complete at least 30 total credits, or the last 15 credits, at MCC in order to earn a degree at MCC.
• Due to statewide rules, LEAP credits may not be used to fulfill requirements for the Michigan Transfer Agreement (MTA).
• Students seeking credit solely based on a professional licensure or certification should follow the Credit for Industry-Recognized Credentials process rather than LEAP.
Questions?
For guidance on submitting a LEAP application, please contact a MCC Counselor or the appropriate Academic Department Chairperson. Visit the Counseling and Advising Center page for more information about how to connect with a Counselor. To find the contact information for a specific Academic Department, visit the Academic Departments page.
For questions about MCC’s LEAP policy or the status of a LEAP application you already submitted, please contact the Registrar’s Office at OfficeoftheRegistrar@muskegoncc.edu.
