WHY SOCIOLOGY?

Because society must be explained. Sociology is the scientific, humanistic, and critical discipline which studies almost all aspects of society from the ways parents socialize their children, to how different forms of inequality are reproduced in daily life. Sociologists use varied methods of analysis surveys, interviews, observation, participation, ethnography, and historical investigation to probe into the deepest questions about our society: Why is there poverty? What causes violent conflict? What is the nature of social interaction? How is technology changing human relationships? Does ideology affect our judgement?

Sociology truly teaches the student to be scientifically critical of the society and social circumstances in which they find themselves. Sociology can equip the student to explain the causes of social problems and then propose socially relevant solutions to those problems.
