WHY LITERATURE?
A Taoist proverb reminds us that, “The Journey is the reward.” MCC’s English Department’s Literature courses guide students on a journey of self-discovery, encouraging them to find their unique voices and points of view, honing their writing skills and sharpening their powers of critical thinking. Along the way they encounter literary works–stories, characters, places, and symbols–that inspire and instruct.
Studying Literature is not simply the study of practical skills; it is the combination and refining of the ability to critically read, write, and think. It is the study of different perspectives, and the willingness to open our minds and be open to others. Ultimately, studying literature is studying what it means to be human, and the best way to realize who we are.
English majors make good teachers, lawyers, editors, journalists, writers.
