MCC Offers Cash Prizes in Poetry Competition

Wednesday, February 19, 2025

Muskegon Community College’s English Honors Society, Sigma Kappa Delta, is inviting students and community members to experience the power of poetry at an Open Mic Poetry Night on February 20th from 7:00–9:00 PM at The Community House: Coffeehouse and Social in Norton Shores.

This event provides a platform for MCC students to express their creativity through the spoken word, fostering a sense of community, togetherness, and hope.

“Poetry has the power to bridge divides, inspire change, and give voice to emotions that might otherwise go unheard,” said MCC English Professor Sean Colcleasure.  “This open mic night is an incredible opportunity for MCC students to share their art and connect with others through the power of the spoken word.”

The evening will feature up to 25 poets, each sharing their original work, with the top three performances earning cash prizes and bragging rights:

  • 1st Place: $100
  • 2nd Place: $50
  • 3rd Place: $25

Submissions are now open for the first 25 poets who wish to participate. Those interested should contact Sean Colcleasure at sean.colcleasure@muskegoncc.edu to secure their spot.
