Who Should Take a Placement Test?
Placement testing is only required for students interested in Nursing or Respiratory Therapy programs, and some Early College and High School Dual Enrollment programs. Placement testing is not required for students going into other programs at MCC.

How to Schedule Placement Testing at MCC
Appointments are required. To schedule an appointment for the MCC placement test, please email TestingCenter@muskegoncc.edu or call (231) 777-0394. If making an appointment by email, please include your name, phone number, MCC student ID number, birthdate, and ACT/SAT scores and date taken, and indicate that you are interested in making an appointment to take the placement test.
Note: If you arrive more than 15 minutes late, we will reschedule you for a later date/time. If you do not complete your test 15 minutes prior to the Testing Center closing time, you must schedule another appointment to return and complete your test.

- Mondays: 8 a.m. – 6:30 p.m. (open until 7 p.m. by appointment only as needed)
Tuesdays/Wednesdays: 8 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. - Thursdays: 8 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. (open until 7 p.m. by appointment only as needed)
- Friday: 8 a.m. – Noon
Note: All tests must be completed at least 15 minutes before closing time.
How to Schedule a Remote Test (Outside of Muskegon)
If you are planning to attend MCC but do not currently live in Muskegon, you can schedule to take the MCC Placement test at a remote test site. To do so, please contact the MCC Testing Center by email at TestingCenter@muskegoncc.edu or by calling (231) 777-0394 to set up your Remote Test Registration at another college in your area.
If you live in Muskegon but are planning to attend another college or university that requires the Accuplacer Placement test, you can schedule to take the test here at MCC. You must first contact the Testing/Placement Office at the college or university where you are planning to attend and ask to be registered for a Remote Test at Muskegon Community College. You will receive an email with a Registration Number and instructions on how to make your testing appointment at MCC.
There is a $25 fee for all non-MCC students.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the MCC Placement Test?
The Accuplacer placement test is a computer-based test which is used to place you in classes that match your abilities. The Accuplacer test is a series of tests that will measure your level in reading comprehension, writing skills and math skills. You cannot fail the placement tests; they are used to help determine your starting point at MCC.
How long does it take to complete the placement tests?
Accuplacer tests are untimed. The reading test consists of 20 questions, the writing test consists of 25 questions and each level of math consists of 20 questions. On average, it takes approximately 1.5 to 2 hours to complete all three parts.
What will I need to take the test?
- MCC student number: all students taking the MCC Placement test should first apply to MCC and have a processed College Application on file with MCC.
- Fee: Placement testing is free except for individuals who do not have an MCC student ID number. These individuals will be charged a $25 fee to take the MCC Placement Test. This fee should be paid in exact cash when you come for testing.
- Authorization to Release: If you wish for MCC to send your test scores to another college, organization, or company, you must complete the Authorization to Release Test Information.
- Provided: The MCC Placement Test is taken on the computer. We provide pencils and scrap paper.Some math questions allow the use of calculator, and some do not. When a calculator is allowed, students will have access to an online calculator within the testing system. Students cannot use a separate calculator other than the one within the testing system.
How will I get my scores?
Immediately after you finish taking the MCC Placement Test, you will receive a copy of your results.
Can I retake the placement test?
If necessary, students may retake the MCC Reading/Writing/Math Placement Tests one time. A 24-hour waiting period is required between initial test and retest. If a student has taken any portion of the test two times, the student will need permission from an MCC Counselor to take that portion a third time.
