WHY WOMEN AND GENDER STUDIES?
Women and Gender Studies arose on college campuses in the late 1960s and early 1970s as a way to rebalance the higher education curriculum. In response to the absence, misrepresentation, and trivialization of women in the higher education curriculum courses the field of Women and Gender Studies emerged. MCC offers two courses. In the Women and Gender Studies course (WGS 101), students study not only women’s history, which was often omitted from college curriculum and texts, and achievements, but also women’s diverse experiences, perspectives, and contributions by examining cultural beliefs and stereotyped images of women and their roles in different times and places. The course explores women and work, body image, media influences, women and politics, women and the law, women’s history, gender-role socialization, the issue of diversity, Gender Violence, and feminism. The second course (WGS-201) looks in depth at LGBTQ.
