Degrees/Certificates
WHY WELDING TECHNOLOGY?
MCC offers an associate in applied science in welding technology as well as a welding technology certificate program. Welding Technology is a diversified program of skills dealing with the fabrication of metal products from rolled, stamped, forged or cast shapes. The type of metal, position of weldments, and use of structural shapes will be handled in a manner similar to that used in industrial processing. Selection of the proper welding methods, materials and procedures required will provide training in solving realistic problems found in the welding field. The demand for skilled welders is rising and students who like designing and building with metal, have interests in materials engineering, robotics, computer aided design, and systems integration have a unique opportunity to learn a career that can be shaped around their interests.
AWS ACCREDITED TESTING FACILITY
Muskegon Community College is accredited by the American Welding Society (AWS) as an Accredited Testing Facility (ATF) to offer welder certification testing.
The only AWS Accredited Testing Facility in west Michigan and only one of six in the state, MCC offers these credentials to professional skill trades welders, local industry and MCC students. Students will have the opportunity to become certified in various areas of welding, including both pipe and plate on steel, stainless, and aluminum materials, in conjunction with their classes. Testing is optional as part of MCC welding classes and test fees are paid as course fees.
In addition, any manufacturer, mechanical contractor, construction industry, pressure piping, or production facility, among others, can utilize MCC services to certify their welders. MCC has certified welding inspectors, on staff to conduct welder testing. Pricing for certification tests is arranged on a case-by-case basis and can be determined by contacting Tom Sumerix at (231) 777-0358 or tom.sumerix@muskegoncc.edu.
