WHY PHILOSOPHY?
Philosophy means the love of wisdom. Philosophy classes help people to think clearly and critically. Philosophy asks the big questions such as “Does God exist?” “What is beauty?” “Do we have free will?” “Is Artificial Intelligence possible?” “Why be moral?” and “Is ethics relative?” These are central questions about our lives and as Socrates said, asking them “makes our lives worth living.” Answering them allows us to understand ourselves and the world, and helps us to become better problem solvers.
Philosophy classes are excellent preparation for jobs that demand careful reading, critical thinking, ethical behavior, and sound judgment. Mid-level salaries for philosophy majors are higher than for many other popular majors. Philosophy also is a good preparation for many professional degrees in areas such as law, medicine, religion, and business. MCC offers classes in logic, business ethics, biomedical ethics, introduction to philosophy, environmental ethics, the philosophy of religion, and world religions.
