WHY COMPOSITION/WRITING?

The English department offers remedial and basic composition courses, often called “gateway” courses, that get students started in their college careers. Knowledge of the English language and skill in using it are required in many aspects of life, including one’s employment; consequently, many MCC courses, programs, and degrees require competency in English composition. The English department takes seriously MCC’s mission “to prepare students in critical thinking, communication, and long-term learning skills for the changing challenges of the future” and to prepare student for successful transfer to four-year colleges and universities. (MCC catalogue p. 3) . When composition instructors teach their students to write essays and research papers, what they’re really teaching them is to be consumers and interpreters of information, to think for themselves, to strategize, to draft and craft, to adopt an academic writing voice, and to communicate clearly and meaningfully. In addition to composition, MCC English department offers other upper-level “writing” courses for students interested in pursuing a career or major in writing–from Creative Writing (ENG 222) to a Poetry Writing Seminar (ENG 223), to the nature of Language (ENG 210).
