Social Media Policies & Procedures

MCC encourages the use of social media to connect with students, employees, alumni, potential students, and the community. Social Media is an excellent venue to communicate, share, engage, and discuss events around campus, enrollment, academic programs, student success, and much more. Our social media strategy at Muskegon Community College (MCC) is designed to cultivate community and campus involvement while elevating the public perception of our institution. All official MCC social media sites must adhere to state and federal laws and college policies. Only public information may be posted on MCC social media sites.

MCC is committed to fostering an educational environment that allows for freedom of speech and expression in accordance with the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, However, MCC will not tolerate any activity or posting on an official MCC social media site that loses First Amendment protections such as any unlawful, defamatory, or obscene activity or posting. MCC reserves the right to remove any such posting without notice. MCC also reserves the right to refer negative or illegal social media activity to appropriate authorities.

Creating MCC Associated Social Media Accounts

  • All new MCC social media accounts require approval from Kristin Tank (kristin.tank@muskegoncc.edu).
  • Account names should include “MCC” or “Muskegoncc” (e.g., @MCCgardenclub).
  • MCC-associated accounts must display the official college logo, approved by MCC Marketing & Communications.
  • Maintain consistency by using the same social media handle across all platforms (e.g., @MCCgardenclub).
  • Provide and keep current sign-on credentials on file with Samantha Korecki, Social Media Coordinator

MCC Social Media Content Guidelines

To maintain a positive online environment, our administrators reserve the right to remove content that violates the following guidelines:

  • Obscene, profane, discriminatory, threatening, or harassing language.
  • Disclosure of confidential information by law.
  • Comments advocating illegal activity.
  • Violations of copyrights or trademarks.
  • Advertisement or promotion of commercial products, services, entities, or individuals.
  • Impersonation of any individual.

Prohibited Uses:

MCC’s social media channels should not be used for:

  • Promoting events, personal opinions, products, or discounts unrelated to MCC.
  • Direct communication with prospective students seeking personal financial aid or registration information.
  • Inquiries about coursework, grades, or academic standing.

Kristin Tank
Chief Marketing and Communications Officer

ABOUT

Kristin Tank began her career with MCC in May of 2021 leading a team of experts. She has more than 20 years of experience in the marketing and communications field with her most recent work experience as Public Information Officer at the Muskegon Area Intermediate School District where she actively and strategically led, implemented, monitored, and evaluated marketing, communication, and crisis response initiatives. This included advertising, promotions, public relations, media relations, and internal communications to support objectives and increase positive exposure.

She has experience as an adjunct instructor at Baker College of Muskegon and as Communications Manager at Quality Stores, Inc. 

Kristin earned a Bachelor of Arts in Business and Personnel Management from Michigan State University and a Master of Arts in Organizational Communication from Western Michigan University.

Formerly she served on the board for the Michigan School Public Relations Association, Mediation & Restorative Services, and BSA Troop 1048 of Whitehall, Michigan. 

Daniel Boothe

ABOUT

Daniel joined the Muskegon Community College family as the institution’s Communications Manager in October of 2023. Previously, Daniel was a multi-award winning journalist for NPR Grand Rapids affiliate, WGVU News. Covering a wide range of topics including local, state and national politics, environmental concerns surrounding the Great Lakes, civil unrest, and the revitalization of Muskegon’s downtown corridor, Daniel’s reporting was consistently recognized by the Michigan Association of Broadcasters and the Michigan Associated Press for its journalistic excellence.

Daniel holds a master of science in communications degree from Grand Valley State University and a journalism/mass media bachelor degree from the University of Missouri, KC., where he was selected as the program’s Scripps Howard Fellowship Recipient. He immediately went to work at Kansas City Public Television’s Hale Center for Journalism, covering topics including paycheck lender scams, union disputes, and unjustified police shootings.

Prior to his career in journalism and communications, Daniel was a professional musical theater actor in New York City, Chicago, St. Louis, Ft. Lauderdale, and Kansas City. He is also an improvisational comedian and alumnus of The Improv Olympic (IO) in Chicago, Illinois., Comedy Sportz! in St. Louis, Missouri, and often teaches improv comedy student workshops during the summer months.

Born and raised in Kansas City, Daniel met his beautiful wife, Mandy, a West Michigan native, in KC over ten years ago. After getting married, they relocated to Grand Rapids,  and currently live in The Village of Fruitport with their three kiddos. He believes strongly in MCC’s mission of not only providing a first-rate education to everyone that walks through its doors, but also eliminating the barriers that keep many on the Lakeshore from realizing their full academic potential. To be a part of this incredible and important work is an honor Daniel does not take lightly. Go Jayhawks!

Jon Mills
Video Communications Manager

ABOUT

Jon Mills joined MCC’s Office of Marketing and Communications in 2022 after 27 years as a reporter and photojournalist. Most of his prior experience was with Grand Rapids ABC affiliate WZZM 13. He serves as producer, writer, videographer and editor of video content to raise awareness of MCC and keep students engaged in learning.

Mills earned a bachelor’s degree in communications from Spring Arbor University. He shares his love for television production with students as an adjunct instructor teaching MCC’s television production and video editing courses.

He lives near Montague with his wife, Kendra, who is a photographer for Grand Valley State University. They have a son and daughter who attend Reeths-Puffer schools.
