UPCOMING EVENTS:

Exhibit explores affinity for craft and other “low brow” techniques

The Muskegon Community College Arts and Humanities Department is proud to announce its latest exhibition “Creepshow,” as the Overbrook Gallery welcomes a collection of artist Terri Jo Frew’s works September 16- October 25, 2024. The cost is free, and the exhibition is open to the public.

Through her art, Frew says she is interested in contributing to the contemporary dialogue concerned with breaking down boundaries between art and craft, while the exhibit aims to “confront and challenge antiquated notions of art media hierarchy.”

“My affinity for craft and other ‘low brow’ techniques informs the creation of the art shown here,” Frew said. “Like occult studies, these subjects have historically been considered lesser and unworthy compared to more mainstream pursuits.”

Terri Jo Frew is a practicing contemporary artist and Teaching Professor with the Visual & Performing Arts Department at Michigan Technological University in Houghton, Michigan. Originally from Canada, she holds a Master of Fine Arts degree from Concordia University (Montréal) and exhibits her art internationally. Always working conceptually, her favorite methods of expression include (but aren’t limited to) embroidery and drawing.

Fans and art enthusiasts will have the opportunity to meet Frew at a Free Artist’s Lecture and Public Reception on October 17th, 2024, in the Stevenson Center Building at MCC’s Main Campus, Room 1300. The lecture runs from 4pm – 5pm; the reception will follow immediately after from 5pm – 5:30pm.

In addition, the gallery is offering a Free Plant Foraging and Ink Making Workshop October 18, 2024, from 9:00am – 12:00pm in MCC’s Art Studio, Room 1245. While the workshop is free and open to the public, space is limited, and attendees are encouraged to register.

The Overbrook Art Gallery is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and admission is free to the public.

Muskegon Community College’s Overbrook Gallery is located near the lobby of the Overbrook Theater. Each year it hosts a wide range of contemporary art exhibitions. Artists are often brought to campus to deliver gallery talks and lectures and interact with students and the general public. Over the summer session the gallery hosts the annual student art exhibition which features the best artwork created by students throughout the last academic year. The exhibition is juried by a different art professional from outside of the college. Admission to the gallery is free and open to the public Monday-Thursday 9-4pm.
