WHY ASTRONOMY?

This course will help meet science requirements for a college degree. For a person majoring in Astronomy, they will be well equipped to move into a junior level course at transfer institution. The students will learn to identify the contents of the known universe and their currently accepted place in it. Their knowledge will be tested through exams, quizzes, and a variety of homework assignments. Students will understand the scientific method and the differences between a hypothesis, theory, and law as they are presented with astronomical discoveries and interpretations from the history of this science. Students will perform field projects designed to engage the real universe in which they collect specified astronomical data, analyze it, and present findings in a written project. Students will clearly communicate current viable arguments and present clear reasoning on a variety of recent astronomical discoveries, through written exam essay questions. Students will be exposed to a number of ideas from related fields such as physics, chemistry, geology, geography, and philosophy. They will see connections between these fields and will clarify and justify some of their own beliefs about how the universe began.
