President’s Letter To Students Regarding Diversity, Equity and Inclusion

Monday, March 10, 2025
Dear MCC Students,
I hope you enjoyed some rest and relaxation over spring break.
As you know, Muskegon Community College (MCC) is deeply committed to fostering a welcoming, respectful, and supportive environment for all students. I wanted to take a moment to share an important update with you regarding some recent changes that affect our institution.
Due to new directives from the United States Department of Education, we have paused our formal diversity, equity, and inclusion programs and initiatives, changed the way some campus signs looked, our vision and mission statements and other language on our website was worded, and reassigned those dedicated solely to this work. This decision was made carefully in consultation with legal counsel and is designed to minimize the risks of any interruption to critical federal financial assistance upon which you, our students, rely. Regardless of these necessary steps, I want to emphasize that MCC remains steadfast in its dedication to each of you. Every student, regardless of background, identity, or experience, is valued and appreciated here.
I am incredibly proud of the progress we have made in the past with our student success initiatives and our focus on diversity, diversity, equity, and inclusion. These efforts have helped build a campus culture that emphasizes respect, fairness, and equal opportunity. Though our diversity, equity, and inclusion programming has paused, our commitment to creating a welcoming environment for all students and our commitment to your success has not waivered. We will continue to provide resources and support for every single one of our students, and we will always encourage open dialogue that fosters understanding and connection.
Please know that we are here for you. If you have any questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to reach out. Our goal is to ensure that everyone at MCC feels valued, supported, and empowered to succeed.
Thank you for your understanding, and for being an important part of our community. Together, we will continue to move forward in a spirit of respect, unity, and opportunity.
Sincerely,
Dr. John Selmon
