“An internship is an important key to linking academic theory to your career objectives.”

The Internship Program at Muskegon Community College is an academic program in which classroom study is combined with career related work experience. These real-world opportunities are with business, industry, education, and health care organizations.  Students who participate must meet the eligibility requirements determined by faculty within their chosen discipline of study.  Internship students earn academic credit and learn to apply classroom skills while establishing professional contacts with employers on the job.

Student Information

Internships are all about getting relevant work experience, networking with people, putting theory into practice, and gaining an understanding of what employers look for in terms of soft and hard skills.

Eligibility Requirements

The criteria that must be fulfilled before acquiring an internship are as follows:

  1. Must be a currently enrolled student at Muskegon Community College.
  2. Have a GPA of at least a 2.5.
  3. Successfully completed a minimum of 6 credit hours in major field of study or completed the degree career program requirements as mandated by department standards, and
  4. Successfully completed a total of 30 hours of credit toward your degree.

Hour Conversions

1 credit hour………………..60 internship hours
2 credit hour……………….120 internship hours
3 credit hour……………….180 internship hours

For employers who are looking for the cream of the crop among college-educated, entry-level employees, an internship program is the best way for them to build a pipeline of talented, young professionals. In addition to being a pipeline for hiring, interns fill positions and assist employers with innovative ideas and technology.

Note to Employers

Once hired, the student is considered an employee of the company and is subject to the rules and policies of that organization.  The coordinator will verify employment information including start date, hours and work responsibilities.  After a student is placed, the coordinator and/or faculty representative may make a brief visit on the job site. Students must also complete all the requirements set forth at the beginning of the assignment.
