Muskegon Community College’s Workforce Development offers training programs either at your company site or on our campus, at times coordinated with the schedules of your employees. We provide college credit classes that are employer-dedicated to serve your employees exclusively. Customized non-credit training can also be developed and delivered to meet your specific objectives. We work closely with you to assess your education, training, and/or retraining needs, then design and deliver customized training to fit those needs.

Commercial Drivers License (CDL)

Regen Trucking School at Muskegon Community College is proud to offer a high-quality training school to help make you the best on the road.  As a student you will learn all of the important skills and rules for becoming a Certified Commercial Truck Driver with a Class ‘A’ license.  We offer Class A and Class B CDL Training. The Class A Training is a three-week (120 hour) class where you will study & prepare for DOT regulations and log books; training to obtain CDL permit and thorough instruction in map reading, trip planning, yard and road vehicle handling. The Class B CDL Training is a 1-week (40 hour) class where you will prepare to take the Class B CDL state test.

Nearly three million people work as truck drivers, hauling goods locally and across the country on our nation’s highways. Many skills are required to be a professional driver and typically they involve being able to work with many people, staying current on transportation laws, understanding trailer load requirements, having mechanical aptitude, following instructions, and safety procedures. Truck drivers often have long hours on the road, but enjoy good salaries and independence. Job prospects for trained, licensed drivers are expected to remain strong through the next decade.

Training Highlights

Complete vehicle training to prepare for an entry-level position in the trucking industry, plus a lot more. Designed for individuals with little or no commercial driving experience, Regen Trucking School’s Professional Truck Driver Training at MCC provides everything needed to receive a Commercial Driver’s License by teaching you:

DOT rules, regulations and log books; training to obtain CDL learner’s permit and endorsement preparation; and thorough instruction in map reading, trip planning, and yard and road vehicle handling.

  • Certificate after successfully completing the course.
  • Class A (140 hrs), and Class B (40 hrs) classes available
  • Michigan Secretary of State administered Class A and Class B tests.

Complete the course in just four or five weeks by attending full-time. We work with many trucking companies that will pre-hire students. Most students receive job offers prior to completion of their training.

Entry Requirements

A high school diploma or GED is not required. Individuals must be able to read and write the English language, be able to meet the Federal Department of Transportation physical requirements, and have a valid driver’s license at the time of registration. The course trains individuals 18 and over but has limited job placement assistance for individuals under the age of 21.

The following may disqualify you from entering the truck driving workforce:

  • A driving record inconsistent with industry standards for entry-level driving positions
  • Any substance-related violations on your motor vehicle record in the past three years

  • History of drug or alcohol abuse
  • Permanent disability or physical limitations

Training is scheduled around holidays and interruptions caused by weather or unforeseen circumstances.

Electricity

Participants will learn how to safely run, identify, and troubleshoot the electrical components and power sources that operators routinely encounter on a manufacturing line.

  • Demonstrate where the electrical switches and sources are on the manufacturing line, given the proper diagrams for different sources of electricity

Fluid Power

Participants will study basic fluid power laws and principles, force, work and power as related to fluid power, the differences/similarities between pneumatic, hydraulic and vacuum systems.

Statistical Process Control (SPC)

Participants will learn the principles and application of statistical process control tools as commonly used on the shop floor.  Participants will determine when SPC is appropriate, what type of SPC tool should be used in a particular situation, and how to monitor the process and interpret the results.  Simple problem solving and data analysis techniques will also be applied.

Welding

  • Welding fundamentals and terms of welding information, welding certification discussion, SMAW (Stick) welding process fundamentals, Use oxyfuel cutting torch or hand held plasma, Use of hand held right angle grinder, Use tape measure and square, E6010 electrodes.
  • Using E-6010 1/8” diameter electrodes, produce lap and/or butt joint weldments in vertical (3F), and overhead (4F) positions on 3/16”, ¼” and 3/8” carbon steel plates.
  • Using an oxyacetylene cutting torch/Using a hand held plasma cutting torch to cut plate, angle iron and/or uni-strut material.
  • Using a right angle grinder with a cut-off wheel to cut angle iron and/or uni-strut material.
  • Fabricate on a bench/floor, a typical bracket assembly using ¼” x 2” X 2” angle iron or uni-strut materials.
  • Fabricate in position, a typical bracket assembly using ¼” x 2” X 2” angle iron or uni-strut materials. Work in pairs to facilitate construction (fitter/welder)
