10 MCC Sports Programs Honored for Academic Achievements

Monday, July 7, 2025

Muskegon Community College (MCC) had nine athletic teams named Michigan Community College Athletic Association (MCCAA) Academic Teams for the 2024-25 academic year. Each team earned a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher, ranking MCC second among 24 community college athletic departments in Michigan who were recognized as well.

“To have so many of our programs honored as MCCAA Academic Teams is a tremendous achievement,” said MCC Athletic Director Jason Cooper. “I tip my cap to our incredible coaches and staff who push our student athletes to bring out their best not just on the field but in the classroom as well.”

In total, 86 MCC student-athletes earned a GPA of 3.0 or higher during the academic year. Of those, 20 had GPAs between 3.00 and 3.19, while a remarkable 66 student-athletes earned a 3.20 or higher, qualifying them for All-MCCAA Academic honors.

“Although our Women’s Track and Field Team is not officially recognized as an MCCAA sport, the Athletic Department would still like to acknowledge their achievement of earning a team GPA over 3.0,” said Cooper. “Their success brings the total number of teams reaching this academic marker to ten.”

Seven Jayhawks meanwhile achieved a perfect 4.0 GPA. Representing Women’s Cross Country, Madison Parmley and Raegan Ruel earned top marks. From the Women’s Basketball team, Gaby Reeve—also a member of Women’s Track and Field—was joined by teammates Remi Sponseller and Arrionna Williams in achieving straight A’s. Women’s Soccer was represented by Jessica Stewart, who also attained a 4.0 GPA.

“I want to thank our student-athletes and coaching staff for their dedication to academic success,” said MCC President, John Selmon. “At Muskegon Community College, we strive for excellence in all areas, and this recognition is a direct reflection of that commitment. It’s not just about winning games. It’s about preparing our students for lifelong success.”

With the addition of Women’s Wrestling and Men’s Volleyball set to start in the fall of 2025, MCC offers a total of 20 collegiate sports, the most of any other community college program in the state of Michigan.
