BASIC CHINESE IN WINTER 2009!
Chinese 297 (Basic Chinese) 4 Credit Hours
Class Starts January 8 to April 29
Tuesdays and Thursdays @ 6:30 – 8:30 pm - Room 237
Instructor: Fen Xing
This course introduces Chinese Ping Yin and fundamental characters for beginning learners. By the end of the course, students will know common expressions, basic vocabulary and simple sentence structure. Topics in the course include: Introduction to Chinese Pinyin, Introduction to a Character-based Writing System, Greetings, Numbers, Time/Dates, Family, Places, Nationalities and Languages, Money and Shopping, Food, Weather and Getting Help. The DVD and Audio Cassette for each lesson facilitate learners to develop communicative skills. As part of the course, students are introduced to the Chinese culture and practices.
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to
· demonstrate a mastery of Mandarin Chinese Pinyin
· identify twenty basic strokes, radicals, and be able to correctly write 300 Chinese characters in proper stroke order and use these characters in phrases and sentences
· build a solid foundation in pronunciation and the basic sentence patterns used for various communicative functions
· demonstrate an understanding of basic Chinese grammar in sentences.
· understand cultural differences and practices
About the instructor:
Fen Xing is a native speaker of the Chinese language. She was born and grew up in the south of Mainland China. She has been living in the United States for 6 years. She earned her Masters Degree in Curriculum and Instruction from Ferris State University. She has had 13 years experience in teaching English and Chinese as a foreign language in both China and America.
