Orientations for Online Calc I and Calc II

Please do these seven things prior to the start date of your course.

1) Go to the Calculus Review Page (Prepare for Calc I or Prepare for Calc II) and download the practice materials.  You must already have these skills to be successful in Calculus.

2) Go to the instructor's homepage and read the technical requirements and warnings about online calculus.  Please do not take this course if you do not have high-speed Internet.

3) Make sure you can log in and check your MCC email.  If you are not going to check MCC email often, please set up a forward to an alternate email so that you do not miss any orientation information (here is information on setting up a forward).

4) If you are going to use an off-campus testing center, gather information (phone number, email address, hours, and fee information) about the testing site.  There is currently no charge to use the MCC Testing Center.  Send your request for off-campus testing to the instructor via email (maria.andersen@muskegoncc.edu).  Make sure to mention the couse number in the subject line of your email.

5) Make sure you can log in to MCC's Blackboard Learning System.  This course will be "live" on the start date of your class.  You will be able to log in prior to the start date of the class and access the materials that are available (my hope is that this will help you review if you need it).  Just be aware that the couse materials may move around a bit until the official start date of the class.

6) Download and install all of the programs on the Plugins page except for Internet Browsers - make sure you have two Internet Browsers (Firefox and something else).

7) Prepare a digital photo of yourself (shoulders and head are fine).  During the online orientation you will be asked to upload this photo as part of the orientation assignment.

Orientation: You will have five calendar days from the official start date of the course to complete the online orientation or you will be dropped from the course.

What to do if you need help with technical issues? If you have difficulty with MCC email or logging in to Blackboard, please check these resources:
HelpDesk and Support from OIT  or  Frequently Asked Questions

Where do we start and how do you prepare?
We begin Calculus I with Chapter I of the Stewart Calculus (3ed) Concepts and Contexts text.  We begin Calculus II with Section 5.6 of the Stewart Calculus (3ed) Concepts and Contexts text.

WebAssign: You will not be able to access WebAssign until the official start date of your class.  Until that time, if you click on the WebAssign button, you will be told you are not yet enrolled in the course.  When the course begins, there will be a link in WebAssign to purchase an access code to the online homework portion of the course.  If you purchase an access code with a book, please make sure it is a WebAssign access code, and not a ThomsonNow code.
