MCC JAYHAWKS FINISH 10TH IN DIVISION I LEVEL OF NJCAA NATIONALS

2/23/08  Muskegon Community College finished 10th among Division I level schools at the NJCAA National Wrestling Championships held at Rochester Community College in Rochester, MN.  Chad Friend (Leo, IN) led the Jayhawks finishing runner-up at 197 lbs, while Jordan McKiernan (Richmond) finished 5th at 165 lbs., and Jeremy Szekely (New Boston Huron) finished 8th at 125 lbs., to earn All-American honors.  At 149 lbs Mike Leonard (Richmond), 174 lbs., Taylor Cochran (Corunna), and 184 lbs., Corey Moore Bridgeport), were all one match away from earning All-American honors.

MCC JAYHAWKS EARN ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICAN HONORS

2/23/08  Nine members of the 2007-08 Muskegon Community College wrestling team have earned the Wrestling Coaches Association Academic All-American honors.  Wayne Leonard (Richmond), Mike Leonard (Richmond), Todd Barton (St. Louis), Chris Harris (Ypsilanti), Patrick Mehan (Sand Creek), Cederic Johnson (Charlotte, NC), Chad Friend (Leon, IN), Josh Short (Whitehall) and James Dietrick (Pine River), all achieved higher than a 3.0 grade point average to receive this honor.  Muskegon Community College won the National Academic Team Award in 2006-2007.

 MCC Jayhawks Qualify Eight for NJCAA Nationals

2/10/08  The Muskegon Community College Wrestling Team finished second to Meramec CC of St. Louis, Missouri in the Central District/Region IV Wrestling Championships held at Triton College in River Grove, Illinois on February 10, 2008.  Meramec is currently number two in the JNCAA wrestling team rankings.  Six Muskegon Jayhawk wrestlers reached the championship finals.  David Wyper (Perrysburg, OH) won the championship at 285 lbs.  Finishing second for Muskegon CC were 125 lb. Jeremy Szekely (New Boston Huron), 133 lb. Jubran Nassar (Dearborn Fordson), 149 lb. Mike Leonard (Richmond), 165 lb. Jordan McKiernan (Richmond), and 197 lb. Chad Friend (Leo, IN).  Also qualifying for the Jayhawks were 184 lb. Corey Moore (Bridgeport) third place, and 174 lb. Taylor Cochran (Corruna) finishing fourth.  These wrestlers will be competing at the NJCAA National Wrestling Tournament in Rochester, MN on February 21-23, 2008.

Jayhawks Finish Regular Season Competition Strong

2/2/08   The Muskegon Community College Wrestling team completed their regular season with a strong showing in the Laker Open at Grand Valley State University.  Muskegon CC had five finalists, crowning three champions.  Champions for the Jayhawks were 125 Elijah Troost (Comstock Park, 133 Mathias Sarli (Holland West Ottawa), and David Wyper (Perrysberg, Ohio).  Seoncd place finishers were 149 Mike Leonard (Richmond) and 157 Rich Stafford (Hazel Park) and third place, 141 Wayne Leonard (Richmond,)  & 174 Taylor Cochran (Corunna).  Finishing 4th was Corey Moore (Bridgeport).  

Muskegon Community College wins Monon Bell Duals Tournament

1/27/08   The Muskegon Community College Jayhawks won the Team Championship at the Monon Bell Duals at Wabash College in Crawfordsville, IN. The Jayhawks won their pool by defeating Mount St. Joseph 34-10 and Manchester College 30-12. Muskegon then defeated Tri-State University 34-13 to reach the championship match against Division II Indianapolis University. Muskegon CC defeated Indianapolis 25-18. The Jayhawks went 4-0 on the day; getting big wins in the championship match were Elijah Troost (Comstock Park) and Jordan McKiernan (Richmond).

Muskegon Community College Completed the first half of their 2007-8 season with 31-18 and 31-15 victories over defending NCWA Champion Grand Valley State University.  Returning national qualifier, Jubran Nassar (Dearborn Fordson), let the Jayhawks with a TechFall at 125 lbs in the first match and an 11-5 win at 133 lbs in the second match.  Freshman Chad Friend (Fort Wayne, IN) also won both his matches 6-4 and 9-3.  Muskegon won 7 of 10 matches in each contest.  In the 31-18 Victory additional winners for the Jayhawks were 133 Mathias Sarli (Holland West Ottawa) 15-1, 141 Wayne Leonard (Richmond) 9-1, 149 Mike Leonard (Richmond ) Fall, 165 Taylor Cochran (Corunna) 11-6, and 285 David Wyper (Perryburg, OH) Fall.  Winners in the 31-15 victory were former state champion, 125 Elijah Troost (Comstock Park) Fall, 141 Chris Harris (Ypsilanti) 10-8, 149 Todd Barton (St. Louis) 9-1, 165 Pat Mehan (Sand Creek) Fall, and 174 Cederic Johnson (Charlotte, NC) Fall.  The Jayhawks current dual meet record is 6-2.
