Jayhawks Wrestle Well -- Fetterley and Windquist Make Finals - 11/14/09
The Muskegon Community College wrestling team fared well in the Ben McMullen Open on Saturday. Lead by finalist, Matt Fetterley, a sophomore NJCAA 2009 NJCAA national qualifier from Reeth-Puffer, and freshman, Kyle Windquist, from Big Rapids, the Jayhawks placed five wrestlers in the top four. Fetterley was Muskegon’s only champion placing first at 174, defeating Jason Alber of Trine University 3-0. Windquist lost 11-5 to Damonte Riley, Lincoln College in his final match. Tom Webster (133) and Cody Groeneveld (165) placed third for the Jayhawks. Fourth place finisher was Corey Chamberlain (285). Trent Flegel, Muskegon CC wrestling unattached placed second at 197. Coach Ron Gaffner thought the Jayhawks wrestled well for their first tournament of the season. Our guys hustled well all day and were very competitive. There were two hundred wrestlers from twelve different schools represented. The next competition for the Jayhawks is next Saturday at the Concordia Open in Mequon, WI.

Jayhawks Wrestle Well at Concordia Open - 11/21/09
Matt Fetterley, 174 lbs., finished 6th at the Concordia Open in Meguon, WI, after begin injured in his match to reach the semi-finals. Several other Jayhawks fell just short of placing in the top 6. Cody Carpenter (125) 2-2, Tom Webster (133) 3-2, Rusty Burgdorf (133) 3-2, Korey Keehbauch (157) 4-2, William Krisch (165) 4-2, Cody Groeneveld (165) 3-2, Matt Fetterley (174) 3-0, and Nathan Bazan (184) 3-2.
Jayhawks Wrestle Well in Niagara Open - 12/05/09
Sanborn, NY The Muskegon Community College wrestling team lead all teams with thirteen wrestlers placing in the top six at the Niagara Open in Sandborn, NY. NJCAA number one randed Matt Fetterley won the championship at 174lb. defeating Jacob Blackmer, Muskegon Community College by a pin in 2:44. Jayhawks reaching the finals and placing second were Tom Webster (133), Kyle Windquist (141), Jacob Blackmer (174), and Justin Leonard (197). Placing third were Cody Groeneveld (165), Nathan Bazan (184), and Corey Chamberlain (285). Dominique Wlaker (184) was fourth, William Krisch (165) fifth, and Brad Jones (125), Cody Carpenter (133) and James Mann (141) sixth. Jayhawks Place Eight in Art Kraft Memorial Tournament - 12/12/09
River Grove IL The Muskegon Community College wrestling team enjoyed a successful weekend at the Art Kraft Memorial Tournament held at Triton College on Saturday, December 12, 2009. Lead by champion 197 pounder Justin Leonard (Weberville), second place finisher 165 Cody Groeneveld (Allendale), and 184 Nathan Bazan (Zeeland), the Jayhawks placed eight wrestlers in the top six. Taking third for Muskegon CC were 125 Cody Carpenter (Orchard View) and Tom Webster (Pine River). Other place winners were 184 Dominique Walker fourth, 133 Justin Walls fifth, and at 141 Rusty Burgdorf finished sixth after an injury in the semi-finals.

Allendale MI Feb.7, 2010 The Muskegon Community College wrestling team enjoyed a successful day at the Grand Valley University tournament with eight wrestlers reaching the championship finals and crowning five champions. Leading the way for the Jayhawks were Tom Webster (133), Jeff Christiansen (157), Matt Fetterley (174), Nathan Bazan (184) and Corey Chamberlain (285). Runners-up for Muskegon CC were Brad Jones (133), Jovan Highbaugh (141), Kinian Mack (174), and Trent Flegel (197). Korey Keehbauch (157), William Krisch (165) and Cody Vandonkelaar (285) finished third. Ben Breslin (141) finished fourth.

The Jayhawks qualified nine wrestlers for the NJCAA national tournament to be held in DesMoines IA on Feb. 26/27, 2010. Jayhawks Suffer Tough Day at National Tournament
Des Moines IA Feb.26, 2010 The Muskegon Community College wrestling team had a tough day on Friday at the National Wrestling Tournament in Des Moines, Iowa, and were unable to place anyone in the All-American round. Head Coach Ron Gaffner said he was disappointed, but thought the team gave their best effort for their level of skill. The Jayhawks enjoyed a successful season going 14-4 in duals and had ten wrestlers earn Academic All-American honors.
