Coaches Profile
Head Coach Doug PoortCoach Poort is a former captain of the Western Michigan University Tennis Team and has four Mid-American Conference Titles.
For many years he was Tennis Pro at Muskegon country Club, McGraft park, and coached football and tennis at Muskegon Orchard View High School. A number of his students stayed with tennis after graduation. Most notably are Rick Westof, Director of Tennis,Bath and Racquet Club of Sarasota, Florida; John Trump, Head Pro, Midtown Racquet Club of Chicago, Illinois; and Jim Buck Jr., Head Pro at Long Island Yacht Club, Long Island, New York.
Poort was named 45's (age 45 and over) Midwest Player of the Year in 1990 and was ranked nationally No. 1 in 50's doubles in 1991 by the United States Professional Tennis Association. He was Head Pro at Deland Country Club in Florida in the 1980's, winning the Florida State Championships in the 35's and 45's age category. He has won the State of Michigan 55's title in both Singles and Doubles and represented Michigan at the Senior Olympic Games.
Assistant Coach Kirby SparksCoach Sparks returns for his second year as an assistant coach for Muskegon Community College. He received his Bachelor's degree from the University of Missouri where he played tennis at both the club and intramural levels. In high school he played #1 singles and doubles for Nevada High School where he was awarded the Most Valuable Tennis player his senior year. More recently, Sparks has won doubles championships at West Shore Tennis club and Norton Pines Athletic Club. He also participates regularly in USTA travel team tennis through Norton Pines.
